Seochon Alleys, old lanes west of Gyeongbokgung Palace · Early summer — Evening light settling into the alleys, a slightly wistful melody.

About Seochon Alleys

Seochon is a neighborhood west of Gyeongbokgung Palace, at the foot of Inwangsan Mountain. The site said to be the birthplace of King Sejong the Great is nearby.

The late-Joseon painter Gyeomjae Jeong Seon left Inwang Jesaekdo, his painting of Inwangsan clearing after rain. The poet Yun Dong-ju lodged in this neighborhood during his years at Yonhi College.

Low hanok and old houses line the narrow alleys. On early-summer evenings, as the sun sinks toward Inwangsan, the far ends of the alleys stay bright for a long time.
