About Jeju
Jeju is an island made by volcanic activity. Hallasan Mountain rises at its center, and in 2007 "Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes" became Korea's first UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
Walls of black, hole-pocked basalt run between the fields and houses. The stones are stacked loosely so the wind can slip through the gaps, which is said to help the walls stand up to strong gusts.
In winter, even when snow piles up high on Hallasan, the seaside villages often get rain instead. It's the season when camellias bloom and tangerines ripen, so reds and oranges stand out clearly even under a gray sky.
While you listen
This piece was written with a long winter rain outside the window in mind. When you feel lonely yet strangely warm, pull the blanket up a little and listen.
Getting there
You can fly from many airports, including Gimpo and Gimhae, or take a ferry from Mokpo, Wando and other ports. Buses run around the island.
